Longhorn Cavern State Park

Visiting Longhorn Cavern State Park

Located just outside of Burnet, Longhorn Cavern State Park is home to a fascinating natural formation nestled in the Texas Hill Country. The unique caverns and surrounding park have been a favorite vacation spot for generations. Here's our guide to visiting Longhorn Cavern State Park.

Natural Wonder

The large network of limestone caves that make up Longhorn Cavern is a marvel to behold. These unique natural cavities were formed over thousands of years as water seeped into the ground and eroded the solid stone.

The cave is full of diverse geological formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, draperies, and cave pearls. Each of these distinctive features was created slowly as minerals in the groundwater dripped down from above and left solid deposits on the ceiling, walls, and floors of the cavern.

Today, most of the cavern is easily accessible and the site accommodates thousands of visitors each year. Some sections of the caverns are lit with daylight from natural openings in the ceiling, while the deeper portions have been outfitted with electric lights to illuminate the way and show off the dramatic natural formations.

History

The rich history of Longhorn Caverns dates back thousands of years, with evidence of human habitation going back to the Paleo-Indian era. Native Americans used the cave as a shelter and source of raw materials by mining Chert rock to make tools and weapons.

During the Great Depression, President Franklin Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps, or CCC, to provide jobs for young men around the country. The CCC spent months cleaning out the cave, laying pathways, and constructing the first buildings of the park. Their handiwork is still enjoyed by visitors today.

Over the years the cave has served various purposes, including as a hideout for outlaws, a venue for music and dancing, and even as a potential fallout shelter for local Texas communities during the Cold War. This rich history is part of what makes Longhorn Cavern State Park so unique and beloved today.
